Transit technologies have gone through transformative changes in recent years in on-board, central, and infrastructure-related systems. Throughout this transformation, voice communication remains the backbone of driver and dispatch exchanges. Whether it is to report an accident or to inform a bus driver of an operational change, voice communication technology is critical to successful public transit operations. Historically agencies have used wireless communication based on land mobile radio (LMR)-based technology that required significant capital investment along with operations and maintenance expenses. However, the advent of affordable high-bandwidth cellular communication has opened other opportunities. This session will provide lessons from several transit agencies’ experiences with voice communication projects.

With more and more push for contactless fare technology, transit agencies need to understand the realities of procurement and implementation. This session will cover how to implement open and contactless payment to your current fare collection system, as well as the benefits this advanced technology can provide to both agencies and riders. This session will also address setting expectations with leadership, stakeholders, and more.
This fun and interactive break will get you moving and help you refocus for the next set of sessions. A licensed fitness instructor will guide you through low-impact exercises and stretches designed to strengthen your body and mind.
Systems engineering (SE) should be considered a means by which transit agencies can successfully deliver projects and meet agency and customer needs. Hear about case studies that underscore the benefits/successes of an SE approach. This session will also provide an update on the progress on the APTA Systems Integration Guide.

Open data and open source software can allow transit agencies to make integrated service information readily accessible to riders without requiring them to navigate a constellation of different apps, websites, and phone trees. In this session, attendees will learn about the real-world impact of public transit accessibility data (and its absence). We will hear from agencies in urban, suburban, and rural contexts that are using GTFS-Flex to address a number of
demand response services.

As some states and countries struggle to get out of the first spike of COVID-19, transit agencies are in the position of calling on their experiences with the virus to prepare and use best practices. This includes leveraging some of the latest innovations in disinfecting, contact tracing, contactless fare collection, and using data to enforce low vehicle capacity/social distancing. Hear about how transit agencies will prepare for a second wave of COVID-19, and what they will do to continue offering essential transit service while keeping their riders and employees safe. Furthermore, we’ll delve into leadership during a pandemic — how to empower employees, how to educate employees on health and safety procedures, how to motivate and protect frontline employees, and more.
Join representatives from the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority for Part 2 of a virtual tour of their facilities.
To be successful developing new mobility options in this rapidly changing transit environment, you need to be able to leverage technology and measure its impacts. This session will feature two case studies from agencies doing just that: San Joaquin Regional Transit Authority (RTD) and Metro Transit. RTD is providing multiple modes of service, including Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Fixed Route, Commuter Bus, County Hoppers (Deviated Fixed Route, Demand Response ADA and Non-ADA Paratransit, Non-Profits, Taxis, and VanGo Ridesharing services. Metro Transit is using flexible, open source coding software (R, R Markdown, and R Shiny) to develop datasets, figures, reports, and interactive data tools from existing APC datasets from the bus and rail CAD-AVL systems. Example outputs included: daily ridership changes from pre-COVID baseline by mode, trips, and segments experiencing overloading under a new, more restrictive standard of 10 passengers per 40-foot bus; and amounts of time passengers and operators experienced overloaded conditions across the bus network.

The challenges facing today’s transit workforce make up a trifecta -- the transit workforce is aging, which will ultimately result in a ‘silver tsunami’ of retirements and position vacancies; mobility is becoming more entrenched in technology, which means the future workforce will need different skill sets; and a global pandemic is threatening the safety and health of the many essential workers that keep our service running. Hear various perspectives on how to manage these significant shifts in the transit workforce.
Attend this session for a broad conversation about new technologies in fare collection and payment. Everything from the procurement of new technology to the impact of its implementation will be discussed as we take a deep dive into how new solutions affect a transit agency, from agency operations to ridership.
Don't miss Part 3, the finale, of the virtual tour hosted by the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
Safety and security is one of the most important pillars of transit agency operation. Many agencies oversee different modes of transportations, such as bus, light rail, commuter rail and others. With technology evolving rapidly, there are many solutions to resolve safety and security matters in the transit and rail industries. All of these technologies will empower the industry to prevent incidents and accidents and reduce any associated injuries, human or financial costs. These new technologies are also required to go through rigorous certification processes by authorities such as FTA and FRA. Come to this session to learn more about the rapidly changing and evolving safety and security landscape for transit.

Will sessions be recorded if we wish to attend both to view later?
Content is available on-demand 24hrs after the session ends. It will be up for about a year.
Awesome, thank you! So many great sessions.
A great fix for the dilemma of deciding which track to attend when they both sound interesting!
I was wondering the same thing! There are several sessions where I would like to see both tracks.
I like the design of this. It's engaging and makes me want to browse around the site!
The more browsing and clicking, the more Leaderboard points! ?
Good job APTA on running this event in this platform. it's easy to use and very nice looking!
And fantastic UX on mobile!
I don't see the watch live link/button
Same here
On the top header, look for a white oval. It says watch live, then click track 1.
It's in the header - look for the white button that says "watch live"
Just to the right of the "Schedule" menu where you can select to sort by date, sort by track & My Schedule
It isn't there for me. I'm trying three different browsers in case it was the browser. I see everything you reference except the watch live button
It seems to play well
in Chrome. Maybe try logging out and then back in?
(The "Watch Live button will only show up if you're logged in.)
has the conference started?
Yes; click watch live and pick track 1. ?
I hope you are enjoying the conference.
I'm only hearing music and seeing that the session will begin shortly. Have the sessions started?
track 2 hasn't started yet.
Track Two's session is on and working for me!
Session 1 of Track 1 has started. I don't think that
Session 1 of Track 2 has started.
Yes
Track 2 doesnt seem to be online....Track 1 is progressing....
Does the Networking area freeze for you all when clicking on Mobility Innovation?
Not for me, but there is quite a lag.
Hi guys, it's my third time using this platform now so when you do come to Networking, remember to click on Start Chat after joining a table! If not, you'll just be a zombie at the table xD
Been there; done that! LOL
Hi Adriana! How many times now? Haha!
I've spared myself from sitting alone today, but I'll jump in soon! Multi-tasking conference + internal team call. LOL
I'm in Mobility Innovation if you want a chat! 😉
Not sure if anyone has anything to say about the Q&A feature? I thought raising questions directly into chat is easier since the Q&A feature is pretty cumbersome.. Feel free to let me know if you're new to the platform or getting quite familiar with it already, like me for example!
Great information so far, looking forward to watching the replay of a session I missed as well
Me too, not sure how to find them? Or will they be uploaded at a later date?
Well so far I have not been able to get any audio and there has been no response from tech support. Any suggestions from anyone?
Isn't it roundtable time now? You should be in a Zoom session
Please disregard I figured this out.
Click on the roundtable you want to join, then click "View now", you'll be redirected accordingly! 🙂
Thank you.
The chat now function on mobile doesn’t work/errors out with HTML code. Use desktop for chat!
Remember guys, hit "Start chat" after joining a table! See you!
Anyone want to join us tonight to watch the bats fly out from under the bat bridges in Austin!?! ??
Tell me how!
I totally just made that up. The bats in Austin are amazing if you haven’t seen them yet. Open up YouTube and surf around. Even better - maybe APTA will show it during a break!?!
Didn't see you around during Networking though!
"Bat bridges" is a thing? I'm curious...
It's probably that dark and spooky corner below the bridge and it's not even Halloween yet! Hahaha
Would be cool to create a program of speakers over the Halloween season. Criteria: must dress up on camera to be a speaker. Who/what would you be?
Sure is, Alesia! It's such a cool sight to see. Check out batwatching 101 and I'll see you in Austin: https://www.austintexas.org/things-to-do/outdoors/bat-watching/
I perused some of the sites, very interesting, BatFest next year would be great to attend if we are in a different pandemic state though. It would be great to do virtual interactive bat watching - thanks for sharing Adriana!
Maybe it'll be part of the virtual tour?
count me in....though, scared of bats after COVID-19
I was scared the first time I saw them, but they seem to always keep to themselves. Great job on your session this morning, although I prefer seeing you in-person behind the mic. #NextTime 😉
How do I get to the Networking room? Msg pops up: Only available during a live event.
I tried to join a table and it wouldn't let me also
Could you describe more about the issue?
I just got the same error on desktop when trying to start a chat (using Chrome):
{"ERROR":{"code":"UNAUTHORIZED_REQUEST","handle":"0xbf9a23","error":"Something went wrong!"},"loggedout":1,"loggedout_message":"Please contact CometChat support"}
What's the Zoom meeting passcode for the Virtual Happy Hour & Debrief?
Never mind! Was now able to join
Am I able to get access to a recording of completed sessions?
Sessions are available on-demand 24hrs after they are broadcasted. You will need to log back in.
What is the password for the happy hour?
There is no password. You'll just want to go to this Zoom Room.
https://performedia.zoom.us/j/8438944245?pwd=SXFMeUJOUEVZWll1RUhvaEJZYkxwdz09
Thanks Marcus. I found it yesterday.
Hello. There wasn't any survey yesterday after the sessions for PE credits. Can anyone direct me to the right place for that? Thanks!
The survey will go out after the conference concludes. Thanks!
Thank you everyone for a wonderful third conference for myself! Still hate the Q&A feature but I really enjoy everyone's company in the chatbox! Goodbye for now and see you all at the next APTA event when that happens! 😀
P.S. Feel free to connect though!
Hi, I have not been very successful at joining panel discussions or using networking rooms. It seems that this feature needs some improvement. Too much idle time, thanks
Thank you for the feedback, Roger.
i understand that the sessions were recorded , is there a location on the website to replay any of the sessions
You can watch all of the session on this platform for up to a year. You will just need to log back to view the watch now button listed under each session description. The content is available for a year.
I really enjoyed the vendor overview session! It was nice to see what each vendor does and specializes in a low pressure environment. I actually learned a lot and was inspired to try some new things at my agency!
Looking for ideas for the next year's conference - send in your ideas!
Hello! How can we have access to the slides please? Thank you
